Dimensioning of simple systems

Energy planning with simulation

For simple systems, it is usually possible to dimension the BHE field without special consideration of Coupling and control of valves in the simulation. The temperature development of the BHE field can be calculated directly with the hourly heating and cooling loads.

Important parameters are the thermal conductivity and the temperature of the underground

For small installations, an estimated value according to SIA 384/6 is taken. For larger systems, we recommend measuring these thermal properties of the underground (cf. Measurements ).

In the online platform GEOWATTCORE, the performance curves of the heat pumps (dependence of the COP on the brine temperature) as well as any step switching are taken into account hourly. Any layout of borehole heat exchangers in a field can be calculated. Additional heat/cold sources (e.g. recoolers) can be integrated.

The online platform GEOWATTCORE can quickly support the energy planner with the following project questions:

  • Depth and location of the BHE on available land
  • Benefits of thermally improved backfill
  • Functionality of a planned direct cooling system
  • Benefits of integrating additional heating and cooling sources (e.g. air heat exchangers)
  • Effect of changing heat and cold depletion over the years (example: construction drying)
  • Functionality of the system after replacement of system components (refurbishment, renovation)
  • BHE brine temperature during 50 years, calculated in hourly steps
